White On White
Painting - Oil On Panel
Unlike hospital hallways and certain trendy home décor designs, the world in which we live is not completely white. Filled with color across the spectrum, nature uses white selectively to add to the beauty of its landscapes – think white clouds in a blue sky, whitecaps on a flowing steel gray river, white flowers in a meadow of green and gold.
White on White, the artwork, celebrates nature’s beautiful white in the timeless flower of the rose, along with its more humble country cousin flowers, daisies and a carnation. And although all the flowers are white, they incorporate elements and hues of pink, coral, gold, lavender and more within their petals. The entire effect is white on white – subtle elements of a little bit of everything, reminding us that our world is not, indeed, a hospital room. (Although, to give credit to imagination and creativity in the oddest places, many hospitals have recognized the need to be less sterile and stern, and incorporate color in their walls, floors, and artwork.)
White on White exudes an aura of elegance and sophistication, but at the same time, one of simple beauty and quiet charm. The vase is a plain but fine one, easily found by burrowing through the closet, and the setting is a table covered by a cloth – thanks to which, one does not have to worry about the condition of the table. Adding beauty to our home does not have to be the result of following the dictates of TV design shows and buying what they tell us to buy. Adding beauty to our home involves our own creativity, playing with elements we have on hand and incorporating, at our own discretion, what we feel will make the most impact.
The arrangement of flowers is informal and easy, and rather than being stuffed all within the vase, a selection remains on the table, on purpose, or left there while the person arranging the flowers stepped away to do something else. It is a picture of beauty and grace, a celebration of the many and varied shades of white.
