Description
This male Double-crested Cormorant flew in without a stick, which his sweetie is NOT okay with!
Every spring, cormorants perform a ritual of building up the nest, even if they're using a nest from the previous year. The males search for and bring in the sticks, and the female finds the best place to insert them into the nest. I don't know why the male in this case didn't bring a stick when he flew in!
Cormorants are very social birds, and frequently when I look at my photos after a shoot, I notice story lines that I wasn't able to catch while taking the photos. For instance, this last time there was an incident between a male and female where they seemed to be arguing, and then he flew off and shortly afterwards came back and they argued some more, and then a third cormorant joined in, but eventually the couple settled down and seemed to have resolved whatever was going on.
The Double-crested Cormorant is a seabird, whose habitat is near rivers, lakes and coastal areas.
Cormorants can be found widely across North America, from Alaska down to Florida and Mexico.
