Description
1955 was when Chevrolet went from the venerable, decades-old 1954 6 cylinder line (excellent every-man's vehicles for the period) to the 265 CU V8, one of the best super-uppers since the '32 Ford.
I was acquainted with one of the 210 2-door rides that spent the 1st 3 years of its life at the O'Hare Raceway oval. It was bored out .060 (almost to the water jackets) and ran double valve springs (Lincoln springs inside of the regular Chevy ones) with a Duntov cam (a roommate's father worked for the CERV I project). When I had it mid 13s to low 14s were common on the 1/4 mile section of Michigan State Route 99 that the locals had marked off. It had a 3-on-the-tree standard transmission and a power-glide rear end (1.76 gear ratio); it was a dog off the line, but on the 1st run with new valve springs, it would do about 65 in 1st gear, 99 in 2nd and the front wheels lifted off the ground before it topped out in 3rd (aerodynamics is for aeroplanes).
