Description
A venomous snake, the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake (Croatalus atrox), depicted here in an expressionism edit, can grow up to six feet in length. Males grow larger than females but both can cause a fatal reaction to a bitten victim. These rattlers are found in western North America in areas ranging from flat coastal plains to steep, rocky canyons and hillsides.
While solitary during the mating season, these snakes, are one of the more aggressive rattlesnake species because they rarely back away from confrontation. When threatened they usually coil and "rattle" to warn their aggressors. They usually feed on small mammals and birds.
