Description

The waved albatross in the Galapagos builds its nest on areas of lava rock, sparse vegetation or thick brush. So it was not too difficult to see an albatross chick in a nest on the ground. The chicks have not yet acquired their adult coloration and still look a bit disheveled. It is said that chicks are watched in small ‘nurseries’ while the parents forage for food up to 100 km from shore. When the parents return, they feed regurgitate up to 2 kg of a pre-digested oily liquid for the chicks to feed on. Around five and half months after hatching, chicks will be developed enough to start flying and once fully fledged the birds will spend up to six years out at sea before returning to find a partner. The waved albatross is the largest bird in the Galapagos and get their name from the wave like pattern on their wings. The largest breeding ground is on the island of Espanola. The population of waved albatrosses on the Galápagos is protected by national park personnel, and the islands are also categorized as a World Heritage Site. The population of waved albatross is listed as critically endangered.
