Original watercolor painting, 'Two Together - Wire-crested Thorntail Pair', by Lynn Cyrus / Cascade Colors. This very small, delicate species of hummingbird is found in parts of northern South America, within the certain cloud and tropical forests bordering the Amazon rainforest. I had great pleasure watching these active little birds flying in and out of the forest at Wildsumaco preserve, which lies on the eastern slopes of the Andes in northern Ecuador. Both the male and female sport green plumage and a distinctive white band across their lower back, but the male has long feathers rising from his crest, and long forks in his tail.
