Description
Brrrr......It was a cold wintery day on Mount Desert Island Maine. Ice on rocks has always fascinated me. I look at the frozen water patterns around the rock and the shapes of the ice surrounding the rock. What do the ice patterns mean? Did some of the ice melt and refreeze? Did the icicles stop mid way to make these patterns on the rock? Does the ice follow the ragged, jagged edges and patterns of the rock? What life can live, survive and thrive below the frozen water? Is the ice strong enough for a human to stand on? I didn't really want to test that question, so I stayed on land and observed the natural phenomenon before me. The rocks all over Acadia National Park always seem to have a reddish/orange color to them. This one isn't any different even with the white veil of ice covering this stepping stone. I will come back in the summer and regard this rock again and take its portrait surrounded by warmer, summer waters. Maybe then I will walk in and feel the cool yet refreshing water wrapped around my toes! Until then Water on the Rocks, i bid you adieu.

I think it is so important to tell the story of a grand location like MDI with intimate images like this. It gives the place context. Great composition.
