The reservoir is an annual reservoir with a surface area of 1.6 km² and a usable volume of a maximum of 84.9 million m³. The water is collected from a catchment area of 99.3 km², the majority of which is melt water from the Pasterzen glacier on the Großglockner. This meltwater is collected in the Margaritze reservoir in Carinthia and fed through the 11.5 km long Möll transfer tunnel into the Mooserboden reservoir.
