In contrast to many of the famous European cathedrals, Washington National Cathedral (or is the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul) is rather new! Construction began on September 29, 1907, when the foundation stone was laid in the presence of President Theodore Roosevelt, and ended when the "final finial" was placed atop the southwest tower in the presence of President George H. W. Bush in 1990. The west rose window was dedicated in 1977 in the presence of both the 39th President, Jimmy Carter and Queen Elizabeth II. It is the sixth largest cathedral in the world and the second largest in the United States, second only to Saint John the Divine in New York City. On August 23, 2011, the same earthquake that damaged the Washington Monument also caused more than $34 million in damage to the cathedral.
