Evening approaches, and the lamps in the parkway light up.
A young woman takes a moment to stop at the dock, sitting at her ease while she gazes out at the mountains and lake of the Interlaken area of Switzerland. It is rare to find oneself alone in this spot, because the area, known for its beauty, is a destination place for tourists.
And while it is difficult to find privacy in a destination place for tourists, it is not impossible, and there are very rare, very precious times when we step far enough away from the crowd that we are alone, able to fully take in the beauty that draws people to the area.
The artwork, Visions of Switzerland, invites you to step out onto the dock ā quietly, gently, so as to not break into the young womanās thoughts ā and spend time surrounded by the majesty of mountains, the incredible still waters of the lake.
There is no hurry to be anyplace, because we are already in a place well worth being. It is a time for reflection, for allowing our eyes to scan the distant landscape, for absorbing the silence and appreciating it.
This is what fine artwork encourages us to do: to get away from the stress and pressures around us, to temporarily and mentally leave the room and spend time in a place of quiet and peace. So busy are we that some people even skip vacations because theyāre afraid that if they leave the workplace for long enough, management will decide that they are no longer necessary (as if they were things, or products).
But in this constant striving to do and perform and work smarter and harder and faster, weāve simply got to make and take a break. Living at such a pace is not sustainable, and life was not meant to simply be sustained.
Step away for a moment; step into the image and onto the dock, and simply enjoy the view.
