Description
This vintage agave nectar press was originally used to press the juices out of the heart of the agave in the earlier days of this unique liquor industry. During it's day it was powered by a horse walking in a continuous circle - you might say a one-horsepower pressing machine. This particular agave press was on display at a "tequila tasting experience" in Cozumel, Mexico during a shore excursion during a Royal Caribbean cruise to the Western Caribbean aboard the cruise ship, vision of the Seas.
The blue agave is a spiky plant which, when stripped of its spiny leaves, looks like a giant pineapple. The heart, or core, of the plant is the "pina" and is the part that produces the tequila. It is first roasted before it is pressed to extract the sweet flavorful juices that are fermented and distilled into the popular Mexican Tequila.
