Description
High above each town in the Cinque Terre region of Italy is a sanctuary, or small chapel that has been used by the town’s residents for centuries. The sanctuaries are popular hiking destinations and you often get great views of the towns from the hiking trails. This is a view of Riomaggiore from the hiking trail. Like the other towns, Riomaggiore (the most southern of the region’s towns) is built on a steeply sloping hillside and the town’s colorful houses are built close together down the cliffside. Atop the hill is an historic castle and chapel (seen with the clock on its side) and an historic church to its right. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
