We left Monterosso al Mare in the Cinque Terre region of Italy for a hike to Vernazza, the next town down the Mediterranean coast. Looking back you get a beautiful view of the harbor and the town. Monterosso is the most touristed of the five towns on the Cinque Terre, being the only one with a proper beach. The farthest point of land in the image is Punta Mesco. The next point of land closest to the viewer divides the older section of town and the newer section. You arrive by train in Monterosso in the older section so to get to the trail to Vernazza, you walk through a tunnel underneath that point of land and across the beach in the newer section of town. The elevated train tracks crossing the newer section are visible in the photo. Cinque Terre is a string of five centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline in the Liguria region of Italy. In each of the five towns of the region, colorful houses and ancient vineyards cling to steep terraces and fishing boats bob in harbors. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
