Description
On a slightly cloudy, slightly rough day on the Mediterranean, with rain threatening all day, the crowds disappeared from Vernazza’s breakwater, promenade and beach. The boats were pulled out of the water in anticipation of high winds. Located in the Cinque Terre region of Italy, Vernazza has been called the quaintest and prettiest of the five Cinque Terre villages. It has a lovely natural harbor, a seaside piazetta, and a tiny stretch of sand that you can call a beach. The town was founded about 1000 CE and the castle in the upper center was built in the 1500s to protect the village from pirates. The Church of Santa Margherita di Antiochia built in 1318 is seen on the left on the edge of the rocks along with its bell tower. Like the other Cinque Terre towns, the colorful houses dominate the cityscape. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
