Description
The rear end of a Vickers Super VC10 K3 2ZA148G" showing the tail and engines as it sits on the runway in Cornwall.
Majestic, graceful – the VC-10 has always been one of, if not the most beautiful of the World’s large transport and passenger carrying aircraft. It was first flown in 1962 and entered civilian service soon after and – the VC-10 still holds the record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by a sub-sonic airliner, only Concorde was faster.
From the mid-1960’s the RAF started to operate VC-10’s for strategic transport and went on to adapt the airframe as an in-flight refueler to support the RAF’s operations around the World.
Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre’s K3 version retired in September 2013 and flew into Newquay airport for its last flight, to be preserved for exhibition to the public. It is one of the fully converted aircraft and and still retains it’s flight refuelling tanks and equipment – all visible and accessible, along with the fully equipped flight deck during the guided tours we conduct for visitors.
Guided tours of this plane and many others are available at the Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre.
