Valley Of The Gods
Painting - Oil On Panel
It is most aptly named, this Valley of the Gods in Utah, USA.
Massive rock formations erupt from the ground and rise precipitately into the sky. Some look like castle walls; some like ancient temples. Others sport turrets and towers, rocks – boulders, actually – balanced one upon another in graceful design. It appears the result of great movement, immense power, monumental dynamism.
In this remote place, far from the noise and the crowds, there is a sense of splendid isolation – the landscape stretches on in what seems like forever. One can escape, if only momentarily, the hustle and frenzy of “modern” life; the handsome and beautiful heads on screens interminably droning on about that hour’s trending topic; the hypnotic strum and thrum of politicians’ voices as they intone their incessant proclamations.
It . . . is . . . quiet.
As twilight deepens, the setting sun casts its last rays over the cliffs and rocks, drawing out the already deep reds into monoliths of fire. Where the sun still touches, there are oranges and reds and rusts. In the shadows, blue and purple, lavender and gray gently and quietly steal onto the landscape. And dotted here and there, with seeming random abandon, are the brush and bushes, their soft sages and greens adding contrast to the palette of red.
Under a clear sky, one stands here, heart agape, experiencing that sense of awe that enfolds us when we are in the presence of greatness – true greatness, not the shallow veneer of human premiers and presidents, emperors and kings. Indeed, the entire population of the politically eminent – back through time to that first day when one person announced his superiority over another – could be buried here, and it would take up only a small section of the land stretching out before us.
How good it is, how inspiring it is, to stand in a place that is timeless and great, beautiful and grand, powerfully quiet, and free.
