On this emblem of the department of history we see two phases of the 'future history' of the Red Planet: the era we are now experiencing with robotic explorers like Pathfinder and Opportunity, and the time of human explorers: the Marsonauts.
The logo carries the Latin motto "explorare humanum est", which means: to explore is human.
