We arrived at North Window in Arches National Park near Moab Utah only to find the wind blowing so strongly you could barely stand still to take a photo! Needless to say we elected to come back another time for a longer visit but I couldn’t resist attempting a few photos anyway. For this, I lay down under the arch. At least flat on the ground you could hold a camera steady! Arches National Park contains the highest density of natural arches in the world. It is an awe-inspiring thrill to visit and try to envision the forces of nature that have sculpted these masterpieces over the years. While the landscape looks static, the forces of nature are still at work. There have been several instances of dramatic alterations in landforms even in the past few decades, with portions of arches breaking off and arches collapsing. Currently, Park staff are concerned about a crack in North Window as an indicator of change and potential danger. The arch is made from two separate fins, creating a crack that runs across the length of the arch. Several boulders are wedged between the fins, suspended above the ground where I was lying down. The width of the crack varies in response to environmental changes, so a crackmeter was installed on top of the arch in November 2015 to record any fluctuations, which could indicate the increased risk of rockfall. They have found a dynamic situation where the crack expands and contracts with changes in temperature and season, and even changes as much as a half millimeter a day. Since the installation of the crackmeter (who knew there was such a thing), they have not found that the fluctuation is increasing over the years. The area could be closed however, if they find the crack expanding beyond its normal range. Consider your visit to Arches National Park just a snapshot of a continually evolving landscape.
