Tulips Nouveau Variation #3, watercolor and ink art nouveau tulips on Artfinity Synthesis Sheet, by Conni Schaftenaar.
I did a somewhat "art nouveau" outline of tulips and stems and trailing vines, and traced it onto a sheet of Artfinity Synthesis Multimedia (a plastic sheet like Yupo). I used Posca pens to ink my drawing lines and let it dry very well. Posca proved to be waterproof even on this plastic sheet, unlike Micron and Sharpie ink - both of those could be disturbed with any rubbing or movement right on them. I protected the tulip flowers with liquid mask. Then, I flooded the sheet with dioxazine violet and a couple of blues. I then used plastic wrap to scrunch and spread the colors all across the sheet. I left it alone for 24 hours, then pulled the plastic; I had to let it finish air drying, but it had gotten dry enough to where the textures the plastic wrap added wasn't disturbed by pulling it off. I removed the mask from the flowers and put pale violet on them, adding small pieces of plastic wrap to make the texture happen there, too. I was obsessed with this pattern and I rendered it in a multi-colored version first (this is variation #3), then in reds and yellows, then did it again in watercolor on Arches paper. That variation is submitted to a regional competition, so can't share it here. The Red/Yellow version is on my gallery; I will likely upload the multi-colored version of this at some point.
