Tufted Titmouse In Abelia Shrub In South Carolina

Description
A tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) sits on a branch of an abelia shrub, with a blooming forsythia in the distance behind it. Male and female look the same, and they are year round residents in roughly the eastern half of the United States. The large black eyes, small round bill, and brushy crest gives these birds a quiet but eager expression that matches the way they flit through canopies, hang from twig-ends, and drop into bird feeders. When a titmouse finds a large seed, it will carry the prize to a perch and crack it with sharp whacks of its stout bill. Although this particular bird seems to be sitting quietly, he shot off to the feeder immediately after the image was taken. Often hanging out with chickadees in the winter, they feel no threat from each other.
