Description
In Southern California there are Star Pine trees that are tall and beautiful. I see why they are called this as I shot this photograph at an angle showing the top growth that really looks like a star shape. I processed this image in black and white for the dramatic tones and star outlines of the branches.
Star Pine trees (Araucaria heterophylla) are also called Norfolk Island Pine. It is not really a pine tree and grows best in tropical climates, however many people grow them as house plants. Sometimes you see these in the grocery stores selling as Christmas trees around December. Outside in the native climate they can actually grow to about 200 feet tall. This one was about 50 feet tall.

In addition to the banner, I am adding this more permanent recognition of its FEATURE on the homepage of A TREE OR TREES IN BLACK AND WHITE. I try mightily to feature only images that would be at home in a juried competition. No doubt that this image fits that bill. CONGRATULATIONS! And consider adding your image to DISCUSSIONS "Please post your featured photograph here" for greater, long-lasting visibility.
