The cemeteries in the Cinque Terre region of Italy are always a pleasant and peaceful place to visit and since they are located high on the hills above the towns the views are some of the best! In the cemetery for the town of Monterosso, I spotted this traditional-looking broom which I have seen in many places during my travels. It took some searching to find out if it had a special name. It turns out that this traditional broom constructed from a bundle of twigs tied to a pole is called a besom. A modern maker of besoms says that they are great brooms because the action is a flick, not a push, so you can clear leaves or debris off a lawn or gravel driveway without damaging or disturbing the surface beneath. As such they are treasured by knowledgeable gardeners and professional groundsmen. And apparently by those charged with the upkeep of the cemeteries in Cinque Terre.
