San Gimignano, a walled town in Tuscany, Italy, is famous for its medieval architecture, particularly in the preservation of about its tower houses. At the height of its glory, San Gimignano's noble families had built around 72 tower-houses as symbols of their wealth and power. Although only 14 have survived, San Gimignano still retains its feudal atmosphere and appearance. From afar, the skyline has been likened to a medieval Manhattan. The "Historic Centre of San Gimignano" was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990.
