Tomato Hornworm And The Fly

Description
A battle only in nature was happening in my garden today. A large fly was attacking a tomato hornworm. The fly would attack, land, fly off, and all the time, this hornworm was fighting the fly off as best as it could. It was fascinating to see...and the fact that I had never seen a battle in nature as this, it was all the more exciting. I am hopeful someone can tell me what was going on with this battle. I welcome the insight!

Amazing photograph! It might have been laying eggs. I have pulled many hornworms off tomato plants, and often left the ones with white predator eggs on them to encourage their help with hornworm control. The other day, i watched a yellow jacket wasp search for and capture caterpillars on a geranium plant in a hanging basket. It kept dropping them because they were too big, so it kept coming back until it caught and dropped them all where I could dispose of them.

Robert, thank you for the insight! I had never seen anything like this with the worms. It was really awesome to see nature at its best. Thank you for the information about the natural pest control!
