The Big Buddha sits on top of a mountain in the Ngong Ping area of Lantau island in Hong Kong. The pilgrimage to this great statue is made much more easily today with the introduction of a cable car from Tung Chung lifting visitors to the Po Lin monastery. From there it is a short walk up the steps to the lotus flower platform that this huge statue sits aloft. The Buddha is reported to weigh 250 metric tones, is 34 meters tall and constructed of bronze plates.
