They Grow Up So Fast! The chick is already showing the identifying feather coloration of its species. I think it's a girl. Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Melanerpes carolinus, are medium-sized woodpeckers of the family Picidae. These pale, medium-sized woodpeckers are found in the Southeastern USA. The strikingly barred backs and gleaming red caps of these birds and the orange around the bill are a lovely sight. The male has a bright red cap all the way to the bill, while his lady has a grey head in front of the red area, also with a touch of orange accenting her black beak.
Woodpeckers are beneficial insect eaters and enjoy significant amount of vegetarian diet-- plant material including acorns, nuts, fruits, seeds. The couple took turns incubating the eggs as a team for 2 weeks and this baby is the one that survived!
