Sometimes what looks like a bad photo can be salvaged into something beautiful. I had been watching this Barred Owl in a tree on the other side of the Guadalupe River for a long time, waiting for it to make its move. As the light faded more and more, I decided it was too dark, and started walking upriver. Not more than 15 seconds later, I saw the owl flying upriver out of the corner of my eye and swung my camera up in time to catch a few very dimly lit shots through heavy brush. When I got home, I realized this shot might be worthy of some salvage work. The last glow of light after sunset had caught its back just before it entered the shadows.. With repeated sharpening and noise reduction, and some contrast and saturation adjustments, this mood piece was the result.
