Description
The Pt. Reyes Lighthouse sits on the Northwestern Point of Pt. Reyes National Seashore in Marin County a little over an hour and a half north of San Francisco. The lighthouse wouldn't be so special if it didn't sit on the piece of real estate that it sits on.
To get out to the lighthouse a person must first walk down 300+ steps to get to the building. As you walk down the stairs out to the point where the house sits you see near 90 degree cliffs on both sides.
The lighthouse was first commissioned in 1855 but construction wasn't completed for another 15 years due to a dispute with the landowner for a fair price for the land.
It was first lit in 1870 and was automated just over one hundred years later in 1975.
The light on the lighthouse is magnified by what is known as a Fresnal lens. This light can be seen from 21 nautical miles.
What I really like about this lighthouse is the that the scene never seems to be the same. Twice yearly many people gather hear to catch a glimpse of the whales migrating up and down the California Coast.
