The Preakness Stakes
Hanne Lore Koehler
Painting - Oil On Canvas
The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing consists of three races for three-year-old Thoroughbred horses. Winning all three of these Thoroughbred horse races is considered the greatest accomplishment of a Thoroughbred racehorse. In the United States, the three races that compose the Triple Crown are: the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. In Canada, the triple crown is composed of the Queen's Plate, Prince of Wales Stakes and Breeders' Stakes.
This oil painting is my interpretation of California Chrome and Ride On Curlin in a neck-in-neck race to the finish in the Preakness Stakes in 2014. Sincere thanks to photographer, Anthony Morretta (also with FAA) who offered his photo for me to use as reference. I composed this painting based on the suspended action capture of his horse race photo and numerous sources of photographic references of the Preakness Stakes race for colors, etc.
The wild strokes of oil paint trailing behind these powerful horses, the flying dirt, blurred colors and cloud of dust that obscures the background in an impressionistic style all serve to make this an energetic painting. The impression of action in the painting not only comes from the horse racing scene itself but from my instinctive wild action painting style which subconsciously contributes to the excitement and flow and movement of the painting.
Thank you to the hosts of the following groups for featuring my painting. I appreciate your kind support!
