Description
Ancient buildings and columns in ruins line a crumbling stone path leading to a large structure The Temple of Jupiter. Birds fly in the clear sky with a massive volcano in the background called "Vesuvius". The image is the black and white version.
The ancient city of Pompei was a city belonging to the Roman Empire. Its history dates back to the 9th century B.C. and ended in 79, when, following the eruption of Vesuvius, it was covered under a blanket of ash and lapilli about six meters high. Its rediscovery and the related excavations, begun in 1748, have brought to light an archaeological site that in 1997 became part of the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage, and which is the second Italian monument for visits after the museum system of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine.
