This lighthouse, built in 1874, marks the entrance to Hereford Inlet at the southern tip of New Jersey. The dwelling is part one story and part two stories with a square light tower. The tower houses a fourth order lantern and lens some 53 feet above sea level. The light originally was a fixed white signal, but was changed in 1897 to a flashing red and white. The building and grounds are a flower gardener’s delight when visited in spring and the entire area offers the traveler a wonderful respite.
The gardens have been completely demolished as of this date May 6 to make way for a whole new management regime at the lighthouse.
