Beautiful piece, Steve! Wonderful description...both make me reminisce (and reflect) about feeling excited when I'd get to go shopping with mom. Then anxious to get home to try on or play with whatever she agreed to buy me that day. It's been a long time, since I've felt excited about any purchase. L/F/Tw

Steve Henderson replied:

Thank you for your beautiful reflections, Nelly -- I am so glad that The New Hat brought those thoughts and reflections to mind -- as well as the observation that it has been a long time since you have felt excited about any purchase. I think these memories of childhood are especially strong because we did not have the power to purchase what we want, and when we received something -- a gift from our parents -- we rejoiced in the gift, as well as in the kindness of the giver. I believe that, as adults, we can still experience this joy in the the gift, and the Giver -- It is my hope that you will feel that sense of joyous, simple, innocent pleasure in a good gift that is given to you.

Bareggio - Italy

It's a picture of the everyday emotions - unaffected manner, simple satisfaction- but also the small habits that mark the daytime: the brush and the hand-mirror on the dresser, the silver boxes for powder and cream, the parfum flacon. I love the tissue design on the cushion and on the armchair.

Steve Henderson replied:

Thank you, Claudio, for your kind words, and your observations are spot on -- it is the everyday things, the small things, the simple, often overlooked things that are so very meaningful and lasting.

This image is so amazingly real, I almost think I am looking at a photograph. The details, lighting, shadows and brush strokes are certainly from a master at his craft. This is certainly a special work of art and I am intrigued and stunned at the realism and beauty created by your brush.

I just love this one Steve...it does remind me of a much simpler time! L/F

Steve Henderson replied:

That's the thing, Denise -- yes, in some ways it was a simpler time, but it inspires us to seek that simplicity in our world today. Back then, the world considered itself "modern," as it does today, and back then (amazingly) they thought the world was too crazy, the exact same way we think today. How can we find the simplicity we crave, and need, within the time and place we live now? Personally, I believe that art inspires us to seek out that quiet and beauty.

Fantastic beautiful work, Steve. I am amazed at the memories your work brings to me. The dresser, mirror, hair brushes are very similar to ones my grandmother owned decades ago. So much nostalgic memories in this scene. Very well done, Sir.

Steve Henderson replied:

Thank you, Mark -- I am glad to hear that the painting brought up (good!) memories, and it is no surprise that the elements you mention are ones your grandmother would have used. All the details in the painting are from life, from the home of Gladys Boldman, whose family lived in the home for pretty much 100 years, from 1908 to 1999. They saved EVERYTHING, and the home itself has been turned into a very active, very homelike museum. When you walk through the rooms, you feel as if you stepped back in time, which is what I strove to capture in the paintings (The New Hat, Ending the Day on a Good Note, Phonograph Days, Midday Tea).
