Description
Fort Pulaski was built after the War of 1812 to prevent Savannah being attacked by the British. It's construction was partly supervised by Lieutenant Robert E Lee. In 1862 it was held by the Confederate Army When the Union army attacked it with a new weapon canon that had rifling. The new canon could shoot a longer distance and had better aim. The fort fell into union hands and remained that way for the rest of the war. Slaves around the area found out and flock to the fort and formed some of the first African American troops.
