Description
The Last Bookstore: A Los Angeles Landmark - by Ram Vasudev
The Last Bookstore is a popular landmark in downtown Los Angeles, and is the largest new and used book and record bookstore in California. It is among the 20 most beautiful bookstores in the world, according to one review. It has been described as being glorious, Borgesian, mad in the best possible way. Housed in an abandoned bank building, it is ranked very high on TripAdviser’s top attractions in LA.
In addition to the conventional bookstore look on the ground floor, as in this photo, it has fascinating arrangement of books such as a labyrinth of books on the second floor. The Labyrinth is supposed to be a gateway into an “alternative universe” and features a massive, chaotic, maze-like space housing more than 100,000 used $1 books. It features doors that lead nowhere, time-travel portholes looking into an artist's rendition of outer space, and “secret passage ways” leading into hidden book rooms. It also features small shops for local artists who sell their work and also create them on the premises. It is a must-see for anyone who happens to be in downtown LA.
The Last Bookstore is one of many independent bookstores flourishing across the U.S. long after they were supposed to disappear, largely because of domination by Amazon and the likes. This did happen for while after 2000, when over a thousand independent bookstores went out of business. Thankfully, things have turned around and many indie bookstores have opened across the nation, providing cozy reading corners and living room atmosphere once again. They offer a unique, human experience that box stores cannot provide. They foster community outreach, author reading, special events and discussions.
