The Invisible Barrier
Artist

Description
A hazy figure of a young boy with his hands up against the glass in front of him. His mouth is open as if he's calling out or crying. The Autism colors of blue, yellow, red and green are painted on his hands.
This painting is inspired by my son who is autistic. Before his diagnosis and before he progressed in his speech, I remember saying, “I know there’s a sweet, sensitive, loving boy in there. I just can’t get to him.” It’s an extremely difficult and heartbreaking journey and I imagine likewise for those with the diagnosis. Struggles to communicate and the pressure to conform to society’s normalcy can cause feelings of isolation. This painting portrays the invisible barrier and struggle between the autistic and the neurotypical community.

You’ve communicated distress, empathy and understanding with this and I love that it is also symbolic with the autism colours on the hands. This image deserves a wide audience.

Dear Taphath, thank you for sharing this art piece that express the difficult and complex issues with autism and for the family. We have three close family friends who have children with different degrees of autism. Needless to say, their children face challenges of living in a neurotypical community that most of us don’t necessarily understand and know how to help. You are a wonderful artist in helping educate us. Best wish to you and your son.

Our society has come such a long way in the diagnosis, treatment and understanding of autism spectrum disorders in recent years, but we still have so much room for progress.
