The Higher You Reach. Mixed media on a stretched canvas.
History of the creation: Fall of 2018. I accepted an invitation to create and donate artwork that would be auctioned to the highest bidder, as a means to raise funds for the March of Dimes. Part of this project required working with children, each of whom were somehow affiliated with the organization.
My concept behind this piece was to create an abstract landscape featuring a large tree. The tree seemed appropriate, because to many a healthy tree is a symbol of life, growth, and strength - which seemed like a good fit for the work that the March of Dimes strives to produce.
I produced a digital study - a drawing of the basic composition.
Two art studio creative sessions were then held with a total of about 25 children, ranging in age from 4 to 14 years. The kids were asked to use their imagination and paint flowers and hearts. Each child also had paint applied to their hand, which they pressed on paper to create a paper hand print.
After the creative sessions were over, all of the artwork was collected. Each image was individually cut (this took quite a long time!) The landscape was painted, each image was positioned in a way to not only allow the composition to flow, but to add a sense of depth as well. The tree itself is created out of the hands of the children. Each hand reaching upward as if to say "The Higher You Reach" the more you can achieve. This is where the title of this artwork comes from.
Each image was then outlined, cast shadows were added, the canvas was varnished, framed, and finally donated, where it sold at auction with funds going to the March of Dimes foundation.
This was such a fun, happy project to be associated with. I hope you are as pleased with the result as I am. Comments are welcome.
