Description
John Handley was born in Ireland in 1835, and came to the United States in 1850. He eventually became a judge in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Despite having served in the Union army in the U.S. Civil War, some in Pennsylvania suspected Handley of being a Confederate spy, a situation that made life in Pennsylvania difficult. Handley bought a large tract of land in Frederick County, Virginia in the 1870s, and effectively adopted the city of Winchester as his hometown. Upon his death in 1895, he bequeathed $250,000 to the city, an amount equivalent to approximately six million U.S. dollars today. One of the projects financed by Judge Handley's bequest was the library featured in this image. Built in the Beaux-Arts style, was completed in 1913. With additions and renovations completed over the years, it still serves as the main branch for Winchester's library system.
