Description
the Greek Theater.)The Greek Theater. history dates to 1882, when Colonel Griffith J. Griffith, came to America from South Wales to seek a gold mining fortune. Colonel Griffith settled in Los Angeles, and after amassing wealth from mining purchased the Rancho Los Feliz land grant, which he later donated to the City in 1898. This 3,000-acre gift, known as the Griffith Park, was dedicated as an eternal place of public recreation. Following Colonel Griffith’s death in 1919, his will set up a trust fund to build the Greek Theatre in Griffith Park, creating a living legacy which reflects the great culture and artistic scene of the City of Los Angeles.
In 1928, the City’s Park Commissioners approved the “neo-classical” design for the Greek Theater by Architect Samuel Tilden. After its official dedication on September 25, 1930, the Greek Theatre’s first performance took place on June 26, 1931, attended by nearly 4,000 patrons, and featured both classical and contemporary music, and an act from the famous play by Sophocles, Oedipus Rex. The tickets for seats in the first two sections were sold for $1 each, and the remaining seats were free. The Greek Theatre’s first season and the shows throughout the 1930s provided operatic music, as well as musical and theatrical productions.
Today, it is operated and managed by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks – Park Proud LA!
