Description
The Fruit Of The Spirit, photograph and bible verse, photographer and digital artist, Michele Avanti. Photo taken at the Pyrenees Winery in Myrtle Creek, Oregon, fall 2014
The abundance of life has for centuries been revered in the harvest of the grapes. In this Bible verse, Galatians 22-23, all the virtues of Spirit are understood to be its fruit.. To take these words and hold them close as we eat or drink or relish in the harvest of our success, we embrace Spirit in gratitude and joy.

The Willamette Valley's modern wine industry began in the 1960s when a few pioneers, who believed in the Valley's potential to grow world class cool weather grapes, like Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling, planted some vineyards. David Lett, Dick Erath and Charles Coury were among these pioneers. In the 1970s the Ponzi, Blosser, Adelsheim, Campbell and Fuller families followed. These individuals, working mostly on small budgets and at other jobs to stay afloat, set the stage for the phenomenal growth that brought the Willamette Valley from a totally unknown area to an internationally recognized winegrowing region whose wines are treated with respect worldwide.
In 1970 there were less than five wineries in the Valley. Today, there are more than 300 wineries and 14,000 planted acres of vines. The exceptional quality of the Valley's wines has brought recognition, and an increasing number of investors from France, Australia and California. California's Napa Valley vintners have already made substantial vineyard investments in the Willamette Valley, and others are in the market.
Grape varieties
Willamette Valley growers focus their attention on producing high-quality Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris grapes. The new varieties getting attention from growers and consumers are Pinot Blanc and the new Dijon clones of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Riesling grapes come in fourth as the most-planted variety in the state. Oregon produces some of the world's finest Riesling wines.
Pinot Noir is the grape of choice for many Willamette Valley growers because the demand for the fruit and the finished wine are high. Many industry experts feel that Pinot Blanc will be the next major grape grown in Oregon, along with new clones of the old standards.
In Southern Oregon, Umpqua and Rogue Valley growers are producing eye-opening Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Bordeaux blends, as well as newer Italian and Spanish varietals like Tempranillo.
Pyrenees Vineyard & Cellars, story
For Robert Stryk, our Proprietor, Pyrenees Vineyard & Cellars is the culmination of a lifelong dream. Its a dream hatched over 10 years ago in California wine country and cultivated a world away from Southern Oregon in Washington, D.C., where Robert spent his early career working in the United States Congress and then as a Government Affairs Executive. One day, a friend and he ventured out to the Napa Valley and Robert was hooked - He knew he wanted to make wine. From there his quest took him all over the country, from New Yorks riesling-rich Finger Lakes to Oregons pinot noir havens.
As fate would have it, Robert would find and fall in love with Southern Oregon from 3000 miles away at his office in the nations capitol.
From the outset, Robert set out to handcraft some of the finest wines that Oregon has to offer. He began by getting to know the land and the unique soil in which the Pyrenees grapes grow. From Robert's days back in D.C. dreaming of making wine he knew that everything has a story and for Pyrenees to produce the sophisticated wines that he was striving for he knew that the Pyrenees story MUST start in the vines.
So Robert set out to design a vineyard program that showcases the unique terroir of the 30 acre estate. The payoff from all that handwork can be seen in the award winning wines that Pyrenees produces.
From the very beginning, Roberts goal for Pyrenees was to make world class wine and that is what you get when you visit Pyrenees Vineyard & Cellars. Please stop in and, if you are lucky, you might just catch Robert sipping a glass of wine and talking politics. After all, what better way is there to talk politics than with friends and a bottle of Pyrenees wine!
