This is a completely original style of artwork; it features a hand-painted Victorian era style reversed glass painting of a bugler silhouetted against a symbolic photograph of the sky at dusk. I am issuing it as the First in a Series called Shadows of History. This LIMITED EDITION image is the First in the Civil War Series. The 8 x 10.5" artwork is matted and framed with the musical notes of the military bugle song TAPS. Issued in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of TAPS.

This artwork commemorates the American Civil War (1861-1865), also known as the War Between the States. Increasing tensions between the northern and southern states regarding issues of slavery, state's rights and westward expansion erupted into war in the spring of 1861. Those who fought for the ideals of the northern United States joined the Union Army; those who fought for the southern states, joined the Confederate Army. In a bloody war that pitted neighbor against neighbor, the Civil War would become the deadliest war ever fought on American soil.
Union General Daniel Butterfield, (Third Brigade, First Division, Fifth Army Corps, Army of the Potomac) with the help of the brigade bugler, Oliver Willcox Norton, are credited for composing the now famous military bugle call, TAPS. The call was composed to honor the General's men while in camp at Harrison's Landing in Virginia, following the Seven Day's Battle. Sounded in July 1862, the call soon spread to other units in the Union Army and was even used by the Confederates. At the end of the Civil War, TAPS was made an official bugle call.
