Description
We were visiting one of our favorite bird observation places. We had stopped on the roadside to look for ducks through the old rusted pipe fence. I suddenly realized I was under observation myself by this very pregnant female Praying Mantis (likely Stagmomantus carolina) that was directly outside my window on the top rail. I got out of the car and was able to get within a few inches of her with my wide angle lens, since she was likely too heavy to fly. She actually walked toward the lens, possibly because she saw her own reflection in it. This was the best of many shots I captured before we left her to the task of finding the perfect spot to lay her large clutch of eggs.
