An abandoned and weathered old Texas barn, photographed in April 2018 somewhere off the beaten track on a road trip that included small towns--some not even on the map--on the edge of the Texas Hill Country. Most likely we were in either Austin County or Washington County when we stumbled upon this gem. We were not far from Independence, Texas, founded in 1835. This area is rich in the history of the Republic of Texas, and we were told (unverified but likely accurate) that this is a Texas pioneer barn.

The barn is shown close-up and behind an unobtrusive barbed-wire fence. From the featured building to the trees and native shrubs that surround it, it speaks to themes of abandonment and the toll taken by the passage of time. This old barn sits alone with no surrounding buildings and appears to be handmade. From the slanted roof to the weathered and faded red boards to the iron door hinge, there is a rusty tone to the entire building. It has deteriorated with exposure to the elements and no visible attempts to hold it together. Gentle blue sky with no clouds. No people are shown.

Only the barn could tell us who lived on this property and when, what became of them, how they earned a living, what was kept in this building. I wonder.
