Title
Texas Paintbrush Sipper
Artist
Sue Bonnar
Medium
Pastel - Oil Pastel On Canvas Board
Description
The Texas (Indian) Paintbrush are in full bloom now and are one of the first wildflowers to bloom in South Texas. I decided to photograph some and while I was taking photos I black swallowtail butterfly decided to visit for a quick "sip" for lunch. I thought I would try my hand at oil pastels (something new for me) on canvas board. The black butterfly against the bright blue sky and orange flowers made for an interesting contrast.
The Texas Paintbrush (Castilleja indivisa) is a parasitic plant that relies on other plants and grasses for its nutrients and therefore not easy to transplant. It was also eaten by native people and was considered a medicinal plant.
Butterflies are just now starting to make their appearance and this showy, bright flower is hard for them to pass up! Copyright 2015 Sue Bonnar, no use without my permission.
Thanks for stopping by and Happy Trails!
