Description

Despite having lived only 8 miles away from Taughannock Falls in the 1970s, I never visited it at the time. It wasn’t until nearly 50 years later that I decided to make a visit! The waterfall is located within Taughannock Falls State Park near Ithaca NY in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. Taughannock Falls is an incredible natural wonder, dropping 215-foot (66 m). It is the highest single-drop waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains and is 33 feet (10 m) taller than Niagara Falls! The waterfall and gorge comprise an example of a hanging valley, meaning that its valley is higher than the main glacially carved valley that contains Cayuga Lake, one of the Finger Lakes. The park was created in 1925 on 64-acres of land, but has since grown to 750 acres. Roads and trails at the park were improved by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s.
