Superbloom Hills Of Antelope Valley
Artist
Brian Tada
Medium
Photograph - Digital Photograph, Enhanced
Description
During three separate day trips by car totaling 2,000 miles to photograph the spectacular 2019 superbloom in south-central California, I took nearly 1,500 photographs, several of which will be shown on my artist website at www.PropheticPortraits.net
However, due to my aging car, I was unable to visit the back road hills where the color combinations were truly dazzling. Until I came upon this incredible landscape full of magnificent beauty, partially hidden by a tall berm along the road.
It was as if God took His fluorescent multi-colored felt tip pens and drew yet another masterpiece of art in nature.
This photo was taken toward the very end of my third road trip, just prior to returning home... and right before both my camera batteries were exhausted.
Featured is a lovely desert floor with floral-covered hills as a dramatic backdrop in Antelope Valley, California in the western Mojave Desert. It is a unique view with a vibrant green pasture between the desert landscape and the hills.
Wet winters in 2017 and again in 2019 resulted in nearly back-to-back superblooms, a very rare occurrence as these floral spectaculars normally happen on average only once every decade when the weather conditions are just right: a period of drought reduces invasive, non-native weeds and grasses followed by a season of well timed, above average rainfall which germinates millions of wildflower seeds. They can lie dormant for years, if needed, waiting for optimum conditions.
Pictured in the foreground are California poppies (Eschscholzia californica) with fiddlenecks (Amsinckia menziesii var. intermedia). The multi-colored hills are blanketed with the golden hues of hillside daisies (Monolopia lanceolata), the royal purple of phacelia and the deep orange of California poppies .
The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness,
The world and those who dwell therein.
~ Psalm 24:1 (NKJV)
Points to ponder:
* When viewing landscapes in person or in print, what are some thoughts that come to mind?
* What life principles can you glean from this particular scenery? For example, when seeing how the colors interact with one another, do themes of teamwork and cooperation come into play? How might you apply this concept to your everyday life?
* What other themes come to mind seeing this photo?
* What message do you feel in your heart God is communicating through this landscape He created?

Artwork notes:
I chose a partly cloudy day to take photos in this area, for the diffused lighting afforded by the clouds. The challenge for this photo was the dreary sky. This was addressed by “borrowing” the sky part of another photo I took in Gorman, California about 30 miles away and inserting it into this photo. The hills were tweaked to bring out the rich colors of the flowers as they might have looked at the peak of the bloom season, as they were already fading by the time I took this photo.
Embedded in the top right-hand corner is the Hebrew acronym for "B'ezras Hashem" [ ב ס " ד ] meaning "with God's help". It is a reminder to me as an artist of my dependence on the Almighty, the Originator of all creativity. This is a similar acknowledgement used by great artists like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel who signed their work with the Latin phrase, "Soli Deo gloria" which means, "Glory to God alone".
