Description
Stonehenge under stormy grey clouds. Stonehenge, in the English county of Wiltshire, is one of the most famous prehistoric landmarks in the world. Archeologists have recently determined that the huge sarsen stones that form the ancient monument were brought to this location on Salisbury Plain from 15 miles away in 2500BC. The stones used to build Stonehenge are now believed to have come from West Woods, just south of the Wiltshire village of Lockeridge.
The stone formations align with sunrise on the Summer Solstice and sunset on the Winter Solstice and it was once thought that Stonehenge was built as a Druid Temple. Modern Druids still flock to the monument to celebrate the solstices but, while the original purpose of Stonehenge is not known for sure, it is thought very unlikely to have been built by Druids. This is because Stonehenge pre-dates any records of Druids in England by more than a 1000 years.
