Title
Stormy Ride On The Moor
Artist
Rosemary Colyer
Medium
Painting - Pastel On Board
Description
I was sketching this scene, on Dartmoor, one cold, bleak, stormy day, when along the narrow lane, came a young girl on a pony. From whence she came, I did not know, for there were no dwellings in sight. This was a mystery, but she had bravely ridden out across the moor, catching her opportunity for a ride, between the showers. I admired her for this and just had to include her in my painting. This lane has existed since Medieval times, or earlier, when lanes such as this, were cut into the hillsides and topped with a hedge, which grows and holds the bank together, so the soil is not washed away by rain.... as shown on the right. Or, as shown on the left, the field was enclosed by a dry stone wall. The prevailing westerly winds create hostile conditions, where trees are short and often bent to the wind. Shrubs like the gorse bushes shown, give bright patches of yellow, in the late winter, and are associated particularly with dry stone walls, where they grow behind, or even in, them.

I wonder about that ridge on the right hand side. It looks as though the path has been cut through the hillside and we see the brush and cut-a-way landscape. One wonders that the whole wall would collapse during a rain fall. None of this matters although this is unlike any structure I have ever seen.
Rosemary Colyer replied:
Hi Reynold, Thank you for your interesting comment, which has prompted me to include more information about the lane, which is typical of the West Country, England and dates back to medieval times, or even earlier. Yes, you are right, the lane was cut out of the hill on the right, and a hedge was planted on top of the bank. On the left, the lane has a dry stone wall - built without anything to connect the stones. These country folk really knew what they were doing, for the banks did not collapse, although one would think that they would. Dry stone walling is a growing craft in the UK, where they are trying to keep old skills alive...the same with layered hedging, where live trees are cut low down, almost right through, then bent over and branches intertwined and held in place by more, completely cut, young branches. I had not really thought about it, but perhaps this type of hedgerow is peculiar to the UK? Sorry that I didn´t think to include this information earlier, but, again, thank you for your prompting.
