On my first visit to the Cinque Terre region of Italy, I obsessed over which of the five towns to stay in. In the end, some mysterious vibe drew me to Riomaggiore and keeps me coming back. It is by far my most favorite of the towns. On this day, the winds whipped up the seas and it threatened to rain all day. Occasionally the sun would shine through a break in the dark clouds so that the colorful buildings were warm and vibrant while the sky above was dark and forboding. A long exposure even calmed the seas. Riomaggiore is the most southern village of the five villages making up the Cinque Terre region of Italy. One website says “It is quite sure that the origins of Riomaggiore date back to the 8th Century…” while another says “The village, dating from the early thirteenth century…”. It’s safe to say Riomaggiore has seen its share of storms! Cinque Terre is a string of five centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline in the Liguria region of Italy. In each of the five towns of the region, colorful houses tumble down rocky cliffs, ancient vineyards cling to steep terraces and fishing boats bob in harbors. The five towns are a hikers tourism resort paradise. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
