Storm At Dubrovnik
Digital Art - Digital Painting/photographic Art
This is an original composition created from a number of public domain elements such as clip art or vector art of ships and public domain photos of seascapes by Melbye and Kasparides modified to simulate a storm near the Croatian city of Dubrovnik. Hand-painted digitally on a Wacom tablet using several different painting programs overlaid on top of each other. Each brushstroke is individually applied just as if I were painting in oils on canvas.
Dubrovnik, a city on the Croatian coast is called the Pearl of the Adriatic. It is a seaport and has been since the Middle Ages but its primary industry today is tourism because it is so picturesque and has retained its Old World feel.
According to Wikipedia: "The city of Dubrovnik was built on maritime trade. In the Middle Ages it became the only city-state in the Adriatic to rival Venice. Supported by its wealth and skilled diplomacy, the city achieved a remarkable level of development during the 15th and 16th centuries. Furthermore, Dubrovnik was one of the centers of the development of the Croatian language and literature, home to many notable poets, playwrights, painters, mathematicians, physicists and other scholars.
Today Dubrovnik is the proudest feather in Croatia's tourist cap, an elite destination and one of the most beautiful towns in the Mediterranean. Dubrovnik used to be an independent republic, surviving mostly on trade. It managed to survive many centuries, with constant threats to its territory, particularly from the mighty Ottoman Empire and Venice. As early as 19th century, it was discovered by celebrities as a place to be seen. George Bernard Shaw once said that "those who seek paradise on Earth should come to Dubrovnik and find it". Royalty, presidents and diplomats have all favored the city. The late Pope John Paul II was a fan of Dubrovnik and was even made an honorary citizen."

This is a hand-painted digital oil derivative work based primarily on an image/photograph in the public domain used as a reference. It is not a "faithful" reproduction, nor does it attempt to be. Painted on a Wacom tablet using a variety of painting programs and filters. While my adaptations and interpretations are copyright protected, the underlying artwork remains in the public domain available to other artists to reproduce or interpret.
Please contact the artist, Lianne Schneider, directly if you purchase this image as a giclee print on canvas, framed or unframed.
