Description
A starry sky is seen in the darkness over Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada.
This is from a January 2019 trip I took with a couple of longtime friends. Our home base for the trip was Las Vegas, but we ventured out to Valley of Fire, Death Valley, and eventually the Grand Canyon. We ended up staying in Valley of Fire long enough to watch the sunset, and were not disappointed.
The state park, Nevada's oldest, derives its name from red sandstone formations known as Aztec Sandstone, which formed from shifting sand dunes 150 million years ago. These rock formations often appear to be on fire when reflecting the sun's rays. Aside from the geological interest, this park also has historical significance. Petroglyphs can be seen at several sites within the park, left behind by prehistoric farming inhabitants from approximately 300 BC to 1150 AD known as the Ancestral Puebloans, or the Anasazi.
